Before you order decking

What’s in this department

Composite and PVC deck boards, railing systems, posts and sleeves, post caps, stairs, deck gates, deck tiles, under-deck ceilings, deck lighting, and the parts and tools to build them.

How it’s sold

Deck boards are sold each, in the length on the listing (for example, 12 ft). Railings are sold by the section or kit, and caps, sleeves and parts each or by the pack.

What to check before you buy
  • Board length, width and profile: grooved for hidden fasteners, or solid
  • The manufacturer’s maximum joist spacing
  • Matching fasteners, fascia and end caps
  • Railing height for your deck and local code
  • Color across product lines
How to calculate quantity

Divide the deck depth across the joists by the board width plus the gap to get the number of rows, multiply by the boards per row for your deck length, and add 5–10% for waste. For railing, measure the linear feet of each side and divide by the section length.

Quick answers

How many deck boards do I need?

Rows = deck depth in inches ÷ (board width + gap). For a 12 ft deep deck with 5-1/2 in. boards and a 3/16 in. gap, that is about 26 rows. Multiply by the boards per row for your deck length and add 5–10%.

What joist spacing do composite deck boards need?

It depends on the board. Many composite boards call for joists 16 in. on center for straight layouts and closer spacing for diagonal layouts. Check the manufacturer’s installation guide.

How high does deck railing need to be?

Many U.S. residential codes require guards at least 36 in. high where a deck is more than 30 in. above grade; commercial and some local codes require 42 in. Check your local code.
