Buying guide
Composite and PVC deck boards, railing systems, posts and sleeves, post caps, stairs, deck gates, deck tiles, under-deck ceilings, deck lighting, and the parts and tools to build them.
Deck boards are sold each, in the length on the listing (for example, 12 ft). Railings are sold by the section or kit, and caps, sleeves and parts each or by the pack.
Divide the deck depth across the joists by the board width plus the gap to get the number of rows, multiply by the boards per row for your deck length, and add 5–10% for waste. For railing, measure the linear feet of each side and divide by the section length.
Rows = deck depth in inches ÷ (board width + gap). For a 12 ft deep deck with 5-1/2 in. boards and a 3/16 in. gap, that is about 26 rows. Multiply by the boards per row for your deck length and add 5–10%.
It depends on the board. Many composite boards call for joists 16 in. on center for straight layouts and closer spacing for diagonal layouts. Check the manufacturer’s installation guide.
Many U.S. residential codes require guards at least 36 in. high where a deck is more than 30 in. above grade; commercial and some local codes require 42 in. Check your local code.
