Buying guide

Before you order roofing

What’s in this department

Architectural, designer and 3-tab shingles by brand, line and color, with the starter strips and hip and ridge caps made for them, roofing nails and fasteners, and the low-slope membranes, fasteners and plates shown under Low-slope & commercial.

How it’s sold

Shingles are sold by the bundle, with the square feet each bundle covers on the listing; some are priced per square (100 sq ft). Starter and hip and ridge products state their coverage in linear feet. Check the coverage and unit on the listing.

What to check before you buy
  • Compatibility with your roof system and slope
  • Coverage per bundle, square or roll
  • Manufacturer requirements for underlayment, starter and ridge products
  • Line and color across field, starter and ridge
  • Local code and the manufacturer’s warranty requirements
How to calculate quantity

Roofing is measured in squares of 100 sq ft. Measure each roof plane, add the areas, and add a waste allowance — often 10–15% for shingles on roofs with hips and valleys. Divide by the coverage per bundle and round up. Order starter, hip and ridge products separately.

Quick answers

How many bundles of shingles do I need?

Find the roof area in squares (1 square = 100 sq ft) and add 10–15% for waste. Many shingles are packaged at about 33.3 sq ft per bundle, or 3 bundles per square — check the coverage on the listing. A 2,000 sq ft roof plus 10% is 22 squares, or 66 bundles at 3 per square.

How much does one roll of underlayment cover?

It varies by product. Many rolls state their coverage in squares, such as 2 squares (200 sq ft) per roll. Allow for the side and end laps the manufacturer requires.

Do I need ice and water underlayment?

Building codes in many cold-climate areas require an ice barrier at the eaves, and shingle manufacturers often call for it in valleys. Check your local code and the manufacturer’s installation instructions.

Is there a minimum order?
