Buying guide

Before you order tile

What’s in this department

Porcelain and ceramic floor and wall tile, mosaics, wall tile, glass tile, natural stone, and deck, garage and outdoor tile.

How it’s sold

Floor and wall tile is usually sold by the case or carton, with the square feet per case on the listing. Mosaics are often sold by the sheet and trim pieces by the piece.

What to check before you buy
  • Where it can go: floor, wall or both, indoor or outdoor
  • Size, thickness and edge (rectified or not)
  • Slip resistance for floors, where stated
  • Finish: matte, polished or glazed
  • Setting materials: mortar, grout and backer board the manufacturer recommends
How to calculate quantity

Measure the area in square feet and add about 10% for cuts and breakage, or 15% or more for diagonal and herringbone layouts. Divide by the square feet per case and round up. Order trim pieces by the linear feet of exposed edge.

Quick answers

How much tile do I need for 120 sq ft?

120 sq ft plus 10% is 132 sq ft. Divide by the coverage per case and round up: at 14.75 sq ft per case, that is 9 cases. Add more for diagonal or herringbone layouts.

Can wall tile be used on a floor?

Only if the manufacturer rates it for floors. Many porcelain tiles are rated for floors and walls, while some ceramic and glass tiles are for walls only. Check the application listed in the specifications.

What is the difference between porcelain and ceramic tile?

Porcelain is made from denser clay fired at higher temperatures, so it absorbs less water than most ceramic tile. Ceramic is often lighter and easier to cut. Each listing states the material and approved uses.

What else do I need besides tile?

Most installations need mortar or adhesive, grout and spacers, and many floors and wet walls also need a backer board or membrane. Use the setting materials the tile manufacturer recommends.

Is there a minimum order?

Online orders have a $399 minimum. All orders are subject to approval. You're not charged until your order is approved and ready to ship. Cancel free before then.

Where do you ship, and how is delivery charged?

Super Arbor ships to the 48 contiguous states. Delivery and taxes are calculated at checkout.
