Guide

Choosing the fan

  1. 1

    Blade span

Fans are listed by blade span, such as 52 in. Up to about 75 sq ft takes 36 in or less; 144 to 225 sq ft about 44 to 52 in; bigger rooms 52 in and up.

  2. 2

    The box

A ceiling fan hangs from a fan-rated box or brace, not a standard light box.

  3. 3

    Downrod

Standard mounting suits 8 to 9 ft ceilings; taller ceilings take a longer downrod, sold separately.
