Buying guide

Before you order laminate flooring

What’s in this department

Laminate plank in thicknesses such as 8 mm, 10 mm and 12 mm, water-resistant and waterproof-rated lines, and the trim and transitions to install them.

How it’s sold

Laminate is sold by the case, and some listings also offer a pallet for larger jobs. The listing gives the square feet per case, and cards show the price per square foot when the listing states both.

What to check before you buy
  • Thickness (mm) and the AC rating or rated use, where stated
  • Water resistance claims and the warranty’s conditions
  • Attached underlayment, or a separate pad
  • Plank size and edge style
  • Trim and transitions for doorways and stairs
How to calculate quantity

Measure the floor area in square feet, add 5–10% for cuts (more for diagonal layouts), divide by the square feet per case and round up to whole cases.

Quick answers

Is laminate flooring waterproof?

Not all laminate is. Some lines are sold as water-resistant and others as waterproof, and each manufacturer defines what that covers. Check the listing’s specifications and warranty before installing in a kitchen, bathroom or laundry room.

Is thicker laminate better?

Thicker laminate, such as 12 mm compared with 8 mm, is more rigid and can feel more solid underfoot, but thickness is not a wear rating. Compare the AC rating or rated use where the listing states one.

How much laminate do I need for 500 sq ft?

500 sq ft plus a 10% allowance is 550 sq ft. Divide by the coverage per case on the listing and round up. At 24.17 sq ft per case, that is 23 cases.

Do I need underlayment under laminate?

Laminate is installed as a floating floor over an underlayment unless the planks have a pad attached. Some installations, such as over concrete, also call for a vapor barrier. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions on the listing.

Is there a minimum order?

Online orders have a $399 minimum. All orders are subject to approval. You're not charged until your order is approved and ready to ship. Cancel free before then.

Where do you ship, and how is delivery charged?

Super Arbor ships to the 48 contiguous states. Delivery and taxes are calculated at checkout.
