Before you order

  • Rough opening for a prehung door is usually the unit width plus 2 in and the height plus 2½ in. Measure the opening before you order and check the maker’s install sheet.

  • Handing is read from outside. Hinges on your right with the door swinging away from you is right-hand inswing.

  • Steel dents and can rust where paint chips at the bottom. Fiberglass does not dent or rust and takes stain or paint. Wood outdoors needs a finish and upkeep.

What to measure before ordering
  1. Identify what you are replacing.A slab is the door panel. A prehung unit includes a frame. Record whether you need a slab or a complete unit, and check exactly what the selected product includes.
  2. Measure the opening and the frame.Record the width and height in several places, plus the wall or jamb depth. Keep rough-opening measurements separate from the existing door’s dimensions. Include the units with every measurement.
  3. Confirm the swing and the exact model.Note which side the hinges sit on, the side you are viewing from, and whether the door swings toward or away from you. Confirm handing and required clearances against the manufacturer’s documentation for the product you choose.

These notes are a planning aid. Product names, photos and shared descriptions do not confirm fit. Check the product, the manufacturer’s specifications and your installer’s measurements before ordering.
