Buying guide

Before you order hardwood flooring

What’s in this department

Solid hardwood, engineered hardwood with a real-wood top layer, and the trim and transitions to install them. Bamboo has its own department.

How it’s sold

Sold by the box, case or carton; the listing states the square feet each one covers. Some products list a price per square foot instead.

What to check before you buy
  • Solid or engineered construction
  • Species, finish and plank width
  • Thickness and, for engineered, the wear layer
  • Installation: nail-down, glue-down, staple or floating click
  • Approved locations, such as below grade, and acclimation steps
How to calculate quantity

Measure the room in square feet, add 5–10% for cuts and board selection, divide by the square feet per box and round up.

Quick answers

What is the difference between solid and engineered hardwood?

Solid hardwood is one piece of wood through its full thickness. Engineered hardwood has a real-wood top layer bonded over a plywood or composite core, which makes it more dimensionally stable. Each listing states its construction.

Can hardwood flooring go in a basement?

Solid hardwood is generally not approved below grade. Some engineered hardwood is, depending on the manufacturer. Check the installation guide and warranty on the listing.

How much hardwood do I need for 400 sq ft?

400 sq ft plus 10% is 440 sq ft. Divide by the square feet per box on the listing and round up — at 19.7 sq ft per box, that is 23 boxes.

Does hardwood need to acclimate before installation?

Many manufacturers require it. Follow the acclimation and moisture-testing steps in the installation instructions for the product you choose.

Is there a minimum order?

Online orders have a $399 minimum. All orders are subject to approval. You're not charged until your order is approved and ready to ship. Cancel free before then.

Where do you ship, and how is delivery charged?

Super Arbor ships to the 48 contiguous states. Delivery and taxes are calculated at checkout.
