Buying guide

Before you order fencing

What’s in this department

Vinyl, wood, composite, metal and ornamental fence, chain link, wire and garden fencing, electric fence, and the panels, posts, rails, pickets, gates, hinges, latches and caps that make a run.

How it’s sold

Panels, posts and gates are sold each in the height and width on the listing; wire and chain link may be sold by the roll.

What to check before you buy
  • Height and panel width
  • Post type: line, corner, end or gate
  • Gate width and the hardware it needs
  • Material and colour across panels, posts and caps
  • Local code, HOA rules and property lines
How to calculate quantity

Take the length of the run less the gate openings, divide by the panel width and round up. Every gap between panels and gates takes a post, plus one at each free end.

Quick answers

How many fence posts do I need?

One post between every two panels or a panel and a gate, plus one at each free end. A run that closes on itself has no free ends. Corners are posts already counted.

How many panels do I need?

Subtract the gate openings from the run length, divide by the panel width and round up. A 120 ft run with one 4 ft gate and 8 ft panels takes 15 panels.

Is there a minimum order?
