Buying guide

Before you order carpet

What’s in this department

Broadloom carpet in roll widths such as 6, 12 and 15 ft, residential and commercial carpet tile, indoor/outdoor carpet, artificial grass, and rugs and runners.

How it’s sold

Broadloom is cut from a roll and priced per square foot, per linear foot of the roll width, or per roll; carpet tile is sold by the case. Check the unit on the listing before you calculate.

What to check before you buy
  • Roll width, and where seams will fall in your room
  • Unit: square foot, linear foot, roll or case
  • Indoor, outdoor or commercial rating
  • Pile type and backing
  • Pad and installation requirements
How to calculate quantity

For broadloom, plan cuts from the roll width: a 12 ft wide roll covers a room up to 12 ft wide in one piece, so you order the room length plus a few inches to trim. Wider rooms need extra pieces and seams. For carpet tile, divide the area plus 5–10% by the square feet per case.

Quick answers

How much carpet do I need for a 12 × 15 ft room?

With a 12 ft wide roll, one 12 × 15 ft piece covers the room: 180 sq ft (20 sq yd), plus a few inches at each end to trim. Rooms wider than the roll need extra pieces and seams.

What does “sold by the linear foot” mean?

You buy a length of the roll at its full width. One linear foot of a 12 ft wide roll is 12 sq ft.

How is carpet tile installed?

Carpet tile is laid in modules, with the adhesive or tabs the manufacturer specifies, and single tiles can be replaced later. Broadloom is usually stretched over a pad or glued down, with seams. Check the installation method on the listing.

Is there a minimum order?
