Johns Manville Insulation museum
A wall, cut open. The batt fills the cavity.
A 2x6 exterior wall and a slice of attic floor, cut back bay by bay so every layer shows. Select a part to lift it out — read what it does, then what to check on its label.

Preparing the gallery…
Illustrative specimen, real dimensions. Framing, gypsum and sheathing are drawn at their actual sizes; batt and loose-fill thicknesses are the ones Johns Manville publishes (the loose fill is cut into three steps at JM’s minimum installed thickness for R-19, R-30 and R-38). Only the kraft facing is drawn thicker than life so it can be seen. Colors are screen approximations. This exhibit is an educational illustration, not installation instructions — follow the manufacturer’s instructions, the product label and your local building code.
The insulation lab the bench
Build it, open it, read it. Then price it.
A three-bay section on the bench, built from the listing you choose: the batt is drawn at the thickness on its spec sheet in the cavity you pick. Peel it back, see what bad fits look like, follow an illustrated heat path — then turn your measurements into a bag count.

Setting up the bench…
From the catalog · real listings
Choose the cavity, then the batt.
Layer by layer · illustrative
Peel it back.
Drywall, then the facing, then the batt — the left bay goes first.
How it works, illustrated
Follow the heat. Then the sound.
Illustration, not a test
Dots and rings show the idea, not measured flow: they are not to scale, and no energy, comfort or sound figures are implied. R-values here are only the ones Johns Manville states for the product.
Your measurements · whole bags
Measure, then count bags.
Bags = area ÷ the coverage printed on the listing, rounded up. We take no stud deduction from wall area, and we don’t guess coverage a listing doesn’t state — those lines go to the desk.

Quantities round up to whole bags from each listing’s own stated coverage. Measurements are yours — confirm them on site. Not included: staples, air-sealing materials, baffles, vapor retarder film or safety gear. JM’s instructions call for air sealing before batts go in, recommend safety glasses, gloves and covered skin when handling fiberglass, and say when a respirator is required.
